Music Recommendations From Brooklyn’s Halcyon
You walk into your local record store and head straight to the unsorted New Arrivals bin. You flip through seemingly endless copies of ‘The Stranger‘ and ‘Heartbreak City‘ in hopes that someone sold their copy of ‘Come On Die Young‘ to make rent. The staff behind the counter can feel your disappointment as you reach the end of the bin empty-handed (again) so they start a conversation that turns you on to that new Moses Sumney wax, ‘Aromanticism‘. You grab it, walk home, drop it on the turntable and immediately say, “Oh, man… they were totally right about this!” That’s the vibe we’ve got going with the staff of Halcyon The Shop for this installment of Counter Culture!
Halcyon The Shop has been Brooklyn’s hub for music since 1999. Nestled between Williamsburg and Greenpoint, the staff at Halcyon is all about sharing a passion for music and instilling respect for vinyl culture throughout their community. Halcyon’s staff is comprised of DJs, producers, and vinyl fanatics that work tirelessly to import exclusive titles, stock the best local releases and serve them to the world via their Brooklyn home, their online storefront, and via their Discogs seller page.
Something we found exciting and unique to Halcyon is the DJ lesson syllabus from Raymond Fong. From the DJ newb learning about mixers, turntables, and the basics of beat matching to the advanced lessons in continuous mixing… it sounds like anyone’s DJ skills can be sharpened at Halcyon!
