The very first Crate Diggers Berlin, which will take place on September 24th, 2016 at Prince Charles is rapidly approaching! Featuring a Record Fair during the day, followed by an all night After Party, Crate Diggers is the ultimate event for record junkies! Leading up the the Berlin debut, we spoke with Stephan, store manager at Berlin record shop Dodo Beach, who will be selling records at the event.
Please tell us a bit about Dodo Beach and its history.
The store was opened on RSD 2013 by Tomas Spindler, who also runs Trinity Music (Berlin’s biggest concert promotor). We are strictly “vinyl only”, and offer more than 30,000 items from all over the world on two floors and 200 square metres in Berlin Schöneberg. We do this in tradition of the independent record store, which means we stock all kinds of cool records out of guitar music, Punk, Alternative, Pop, Blues, Jazz…but no mainstream or bullshit. We stock used and new vinyl and are running an online shop as well.
What was your inspiration for opening a record store?
Tomas was running a record store in the late 70s before moving to the concert business. In 2012 he decided it’s time to have a record store in his portfolio again. He wanted to deal with more cool music, also not that famous bands, in addition (and as a kind of compliment) to his concert company and business.
There is no shortage of record stores in Berlin. What sets you apart and makes Dodo Beach unique?
We have a huge, and very fine collection of records, and have items you didn’t know you needed before. We have the biggest offering of 7”s. We do a lot of in-store gigs, readings, and movies in the store. We spend a lot in the technical features, for example, wireless headphones for pre-listening while keeping on diggin’. We feature Dodo’s Metal Dungeon, an in-store for all kinds of Metal, Punk & Hardcore.
What’s in your personal record collection?
Do you use Discogs? If so, what site features do you use?
As Dodo Beach we sell on Discogs (under the name dodo-beach) and use all the features needed to run our shop. Furthermore, Discogs helps us very much in rating records and defining current sales prices and availabilities of records. And surely to find out whether or not a record was ever pressed.
What types of records can people expect to find at your tables at Crate Diggers?
See above, but of course we will try to bring a lot of rarities.
