Crate Diggers Record Fair, sponsored by Discogs, returns to its home turf of Portland, OR, for its fifth year on August 25th, 2018! Taking place once again at White Owl Social Club, you’ll find 30+ tables of vinyl for sale by some of the Pacific Northwest’s heaviest record dealers, some of the finest local DJs spinning wax all day, a full bar, great food, and free admission to boot. We can’t think of a better way to spend a late summer Saturday in Portland!
In preparation for the event, we profiled Dan Berkman, owner of record shop Jump Jump Music, who is joining us for the 5th straight year.
Dan Berkman has been selling records since the ’80s. In 1990, he opened Jump Jump Music and has been selling records out of the Portland, OR store ever since.
When we asked Berkman, “What’s the coolest thing about running a record store?” We were a bit surprised by his answer:
“Finding records you never knew of or heard before.” he admits, “You would think that after years this would rarely happen, but it happens all the time.”
Berkman worked in the shop with DJ Rev Shines before he was a DJ and producer. “We often opened the shop in the early hours of the morning so Shines could bring in the touring Hip Hop acts,” he explains. “Supreme La Rock was one of my very first out-of-town customers.”
So, what’s one of the most interesting records that Berkman has ever encountered?
“Johnny Shacklett Trio is one of my favorite finds,” Berkman says. “Johnny played a four-neck guitar that lived in a giant harp-like frame. He invented it and had it built for him. The record is very good, mellow Jazz guitar, think Wes Montgomery but with more harmonic movement.”
If you are in the Portland area on August 25th, 2018, come meet Berkman and check out Jump Jump Music’s variety of vinyl at the Crate Diggers Record Fair, presented by Discogs. This free event featuring 30+ tables of vinyl and 6 DJs spinning all day goes from noon till 6, don’t miss it!
