The Discogs community is and has always been a collaborative effort, and we take pride in supporting our sellers. Last year, Discogs took Crate Diggers events around the world and as a result, we’ve launched a new series via the Crate Diggers brand that has a simple mission:
Highlight record stores and our music collecting community worldwide.
For this installment of the Crate Diggers Spotlight series, we are highlighting Brooklyn, NY record store Second Hand Records NYC. On September 9th, 2018, Second Hand will host special instore DJ sets by Eli from Soul Clap, Darshan Jesrani from Siren (formerly of Metro Area), and Zephyr Ann from House of Yes! Additionally, Crate Diggers and Discogs swag will be on hand for attendees. We spoke with shop owner Fatik in advance of this sure-to-be awesome instore event.
What is your role, and can you give us a bit of background on yourself?
Owner of Second Hand Records NYC. I started off working at a small distributor / retailer / manufacturer here in NYC called Downtown 304 for over four years, learning all corners of this business.
How long has your store been in business?
Does your shop have a specialty? What sets your store apart from others?
On a conceptual level, we focus on music that can makes us feel something. Psychedelic Soul music. On a literal sense, we started off with the idea of carrying new and current music. Knowing in this era how challenging this would be, we still believe people will value this kind of dedication.
What was your inspiration for opening a record store?
The lack of options to find new and current music inside an actual record shop and the fact that we weren’t any good at anything else. We already had plunged ourselves into this world, why not go as far as we can take it.
What do you enjoy most about running your shop?
The people that come in. We all share in the same excitement and curiosity, by coming in and buying and discovering new music we are, in a sense, one and the same.
Do you have any favorite or memorable moments in the shop thus far?
Every time someone young (under 20) comes inside the store who has never seen a record or been inside a record shop. Curiosity is something we look to reward.
What does your personal collection look like?
Do you use Discogs? If so, what features do you use?
YES! We use Discogs in all aspects of our business. From the Marketplace to just simply researching releases. The site is an essential part of the vinyl culture in all facets.
Anything else you’d like us to know?
We need the support of the community, this doesn’t happen inside the vacuum of the Internet. This is a real world, with real-people-kind-of-venture and without people exploring and showing curiosity, we will not survive :)
