Design and Usability Changes aka Discogs gets new kicks

If you watch our social networking posts ( Facebook & Twitter ), you may have noticed us hinting at some work going on here in the office.

Soon we will be unveiling a new site header and footer. This is the first part of a series of design and usability changes after months of surveys, studies, collaboration, listening, and work. A significant number of you told us that navigation can be a bit hidden and hard to find on Discogs. The goal for us is to make the site more consistent and user friendly. Imagine a Discogs world where secondary navigation is more accessible, visible when you need it. Imagine a world one day of no more drop down menus!

The basic functionality of Discogs is not going to be different, and the design updates will be made in stages. Change can be hard, but trust us, this is going to rock!

Here are a couple previews of the new site header.

Don’t like the new design sorry. It was fine as it was before

  • Aug 14,2012 at 08:54

Really better, BUT, why is the “–>LOGIN” field so little (compared with the bright green “Join US”). When I’m in a hurry, I like to quickly find the login field …Maybe a bright blue Login button ?
    Anyway.. .thanks a lot !

And yes.. Please back white color for search input.
Now it does not look like a input and not useful.

Here what I see in my Firefox 14…

In my opinion the restyling was a great success, and it was right about time to be honest :-) not that anybody needs fancy menues and styles, but the new discogs look is really cool. Good work to everybody involved!

Black color for a field of search – bad decission, inconvenient using. Please return a white color (not for all cap, for field of SEARCH only)

  • Aug 2,2012 at 11:12

new color cap is too heavy for the walk here (horrible) should remain the same white! not able to work with color…

  • Aug 2,2012 at 09:08

Great new design and functions. Thanks for that!

  • Aug 2,2012 at 08:53

    Nice new look!

  • Aug 2,2012 at 01:30

The search could be better. Update looks nice, thanks :)

Hi i don’t like the new header and the dropdown menu… it looks very old fashion… especialy the dark shadow outside the pulldown-box!!!

But the worst thing is that you have changed the expanding Layout. Now the width is fixed to 1024x… Screens!!! I have a 1920x… Screen and now the hole Content seems to be pretty tiny in this huge empty space arount it!!!
Also your fontsize is much to small for easy reading it!!!

Alltogether please return to the old Design, it wasn’t nice but much more functional!!! And by the way the new Design is in no way better than the old!

Bring us function not unnecessary redesigns ;-)

    best regards
    robert

Looks very nice! In contrast to most other site re-designs, where usually my first reaction is a bit of a shock, I immediately liked the look and usability of the new header. For some reason I also like the papery-noisy background, even though it seems gratuitous. Looking forward to what other changes are coming up (and hope they’re all as well-executed as this one).

Have an issue with REPLY button in my maibox. Doesn’t work. But worked well before. (Mac OS 10.6.8, Firefox)

New design kills simlicity I liked on Discogs.

  • Jul 31,2012 at 01:13

Honestly I don’t like this new gray-style-web2.0 header. It’s too dark for and kinda disrupting from my day-to-day Discogs use.

  • Jul 31,2012 at 00:43

Looks great! Good job, keep it up :)

I think that there should be a possibility to choose old design in settings, because I dislike this new design and for sure there are some other people who dislikes it too. I prefer the way that discogs looked half year ago :(

I quite like the overall impression the redesign gives, but have a couple of constructive criticisms:
    1) Having tabs in the lower header is a good idea, but when the tabs change, depending on what page you’re looking at, it’s confusing.
For example: from the Dashboard, you have the tab choices of Collection, Wantlist, Lists, Submissions, Drafts, Export.
When you click on the first two tabs, the other tabs stay – which is logical, but when you click on the Submissions tab, the other tabs disappear, forcing you to click the Back button to get back to a page with all the tabs.
    2) Having that lower tab bar takes up more space in the header area (so less space for data once you get into artist, release or label pages) BUT the Discogs logo is actually smaller too.

The slightly smaller logo isn’t a huge issue, so why not make the tab bar the same width as the bar on the top right with the Cart, Messages and Help links?

I like the new bar on the top from a user prospective, but in terms of design, I think it’s ugly. I think it would look a lot better in the grey shading. The integration of a new color onto the site is messing with my world!

  • Jul 30,2012 at 17:02

    Looks very cool!

Can we please have a dark background too? Discogs has always tried to make me blind.

  • Jul 30,2012 at 16:34

YouTube is making changes for the worse, but Discogs are making them for the BETTER! The new layout rocks hard! Just as easy to navigate as previously!

  • Jul 30,2012 at 16:29

ps. The new header is good, I’d be happy for it to extend over the whole look of the site: dark grey is the new white these days!

  • Jul 30,2012 at 16:27

I’d like the ‘Recent Activity’ to extend beyond just the items that are viewable at any one time, ie click on it and get a list of my activity from the last few months/year. Plus being able to sort my collection by the ‘Added’ date too. I should have put this in the survey, maybe i did…?

I know it’s not new but I really like the New Releases section, great for finding new things that aren’t publicised.

  • Jul 30,2012 at 15:32

    I like it!

  • Jul 30,2012 at 15:29

i don’t like that there’s a small delay before the pop-up menus in the header show up.

apart from that, it’s good. nice design of the footer, too.

  • Jul 27,2012 at 09:02

This definitely is an improvement! I love the ‘Discogs’ logo as well as the artistic design of the site header.

    Rock on!

  • Jul 27,2012 at 08:20

Pre-announcing this is the right thing to do.

  • Jul 27,2012 at 02:23

it would be good if i were able to search for users

  • Jul 27,2012 at 01:19

    Great !

  • Jul 26,2012 at 23:54

More photos of the acutual items like Ebay. Maybe close ups of vinyl surfaces. Or clips of the vinyl playing. How about more details in vinyl descriptions and from sellers. Like if the inner sleeve is present or not.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 23:48

Yes, please add a way to find other people’s wants to match your collection so you can trade items more easily.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 16:47

    very pretty

  • Jul 26,2012 at 13:48

    i want label name variations

    Change is scary

  • Jul 26,2012 at 13:13

I like change. Especially for progress.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 13:06

Also (again), the abilty to add/change information in the comments section in marketplace to all items you are selling. For example – If I want place a comment regarding my postage costs, I have to do it to each, individual item (one at a time) in my sale list. Having a ‘Add To All’ function would save alot of time.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:42
how about a way to match peoples wants with eachothers collections such that i see peoples collections who have things i want AND if i have something they want.
Good suggestion…I support it. It encourages trading which is exactly what record collectors love to do! And the comparison can’t be done through the marketplace.

Navigation would be easier if the search functions were able to correct typos like on Google. or provide alternate suggestions.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:39

Also, never sacrifice usability for style. If a website looks too busy or complicated, I dont use it.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:36

How about bringing back the “Add all to wantlist” option for labels, not just single releases?

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:33

There isnt an easy to view/access list of groups to become part of. Some users seem to be part of many groups, but I have never seen a general list of all groups.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:30

this is going to rock!! oh yeah!

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:24

    New header look good btw.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:23

RiverCDs – collections are not for comparing what people may want to sale as it would encourage off-site sales/trades which im sure isnt something discogs want to do. What you describe can and tbh should be done via the marketplace.

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:09

    looks kinda neat actually!

  • Jul 26,2012 at 12:05
