Discogs Collectors’ Tales #037: Good Old Days by djchicken_geor

There's nothing like finally finding a record that you've been in search of for a really long time. When I was in high school I was in a hip hop group named Bass Tribe, later the name changed to Wasted Youth. By my senior year, we recorded and completed a full length album. I borrowed my Dad's favorite record from his homeland in Trinidad to take to the studio to sample. That record was "More Sparrow More!!" by the Calypso King, The Mighty Sparrow. It was a record that I was very familiar with as he would play it all the time. Somehow during the course of recording the album, I ended up forgetting it at the studio. When I went back to retrieve it, it was no where to be found. I pretty much considered it lost forever. I looked feverishly for it any time I went digging and never had any luck. It's not like it was that common of a record especially with it being from Trinidad and this was well before you could do an online search and purchase from online record vendors. Fast forward 6 years, I was in LA for gigs and I ended up at a record shop, Golden Oldies, which I believe no longer exists. Lo and behold, I walk in and one of the first records I see on the wall is a copy of that long lost Sparrow record! I didn't even look at anything else! I took it up to the counter and immediately purchased it. As I'm checking out, a fellow comes up to me and says, "Oh man! I've been eyeing that record for some time, I came in today specifically to buy it!" I just said to him, "I'm sorry that I beat you to it, but I've been searching for this one for quite some time. You really have no idea!" He offered to pay me double for it, but of course I declined as that record had far more sentimental value to me.
