Downtime – 27 Apr

I’m very sorry but I had to take the site offline to perform some emergency maintenance to help with the recent site slowdowns. I’ll have to do this a few more times over the next couple of weeks as we add more databases and get the system to a point where we can do this type of maintenance without shutting things down.

Again, I’m very sorry about the inconvenience.

The site is much faster the last 12 hours or so. The maintenance seems to work. :-)

As a general rule, emergency maintenance is not planned: it’s a carefully executed reaction to an unplanned problem. If a site admin reacts to server problems in a panic, the problems usually get worse, or they keep happening.

For a problem that causes a server or site slowdown, it’s nearly always better to just do the emergency maintenance (and get a faster site back running sooner) than to plan it and have to tell your users that the site will remain slow until the planned outage period has passed.
…a dummy home page with a “Discogs is currently unavailable due to database maintenance” message
This should be possible, but may require extra hardware and development time. In theory, an old Pentium PC running Linux off a floppy, a minimal HTTP server, and one simple HTML page could do it, but in practice you have to deal with limited availability of IP addresses, rack space, and cabling.

Oh, hang on. The link to Only Show Topics I’ve Posted In seems to be working again now, but verrry slow…

In the Forums, the link to Only Show Topics I’ve Posted In http://www.discogs.com/forums/latest_posts?myposts=1 doesn’t work. Plus the site is generally very slow again. Hope you can get it all fixed soon, teo.

Also, if you’re planning any outages again, it would be great to at least have some sort of warning announcement, or a dummy home page with a “Discogs is currently unavailable due to database maintenance” message type thingie…

I discovered the outage this morning at 8:00 AM, it’s now 8:00 PM, so this means I’ve sat in front of my PC for about 12 hours and just hitting the refresh button. :-)
BTW: Did any of you know there are also other websites? I discovered it about 2 hours ago.. :-)

^^reduce price I meant. BTW where is the edit button?

  • Apr 28,2007 at 10:15

    Maybe not everything 100%.

I tried to change (reduce to be precise) of an item I’m selling and got this message:

Server Error This page generated an error. This is a problem with Discogs. This error has been logged and the administrators have been notified.

    Thank God it’s on again!

Exactly, I’ve been refreshing the page all day.

FFS Teo, don’t ya scare us that much will ya ;)

    I discovered suddenly there’s a world outside.

But ya mentioned the slowdowns, is that why I for almost 2 weeks had probs with connecting and / or looking up things?
As it took sometimes like a minute to open a page or nothing happened at all.

Good to hear ya are improving that :)
