Madonna At 60: From “Madonna” To “Rebel Heart”

If, like me, you grew up in the 80s, Madonna will more than likely have a special place in your heart. An unstoppable trailblazer since the first decade of her career, she brought the underground overground, and she’s the reason concepts such as Vogue are known worldwide. While many 80’s artists were old-fashioned by the time the 90s started, Madonna managed to carry uncountable reinventions that ranged from the spiritual maturity of Ray Of Light to the nu-disco explosion of Confessions On A Dance Floor.

Madonna will always be Madonna, her work ethics and vision have dominated the charts for over 35 years, and it doesn’t look like this trend will slow down anytime soon. With a new album coming up, the anticipation is building: What will she surprise us with this time? To celebrate the 60th birthday of the Queen of Pop, we look back at her career in studio albums so far, using the Discogs Database as the main source. Happy Birthday Madonna!

Statisctics Madonna Albums

The chart shows clear spikes in Madonna’s career: In the early 80s, with Like A Virgin the most collected title, and her debut album Madonna the most wanted one. Then after a bit of a dip in the early 90s, a strong comeback with Ray Of Light (with producer William Orbit) in 1998, Music (2000) and Confessions On A Dance Floor (2005), which are also some of her highest rated releases. One particular album that stands out is that the singer’s latest one, Rebel Heart (2014). It is rated the highest by the Discogs community, yet it’s one of the least collected Madonna releases. Makes it even more exciting to hear what her new album brings!

Musically, the First Album/Madonna is my favourite. Raw and simple, it was the start of a career for someone who went on to ‘rule the world’. Spiritually it has to be ‘Like A Prayer’. After taking a year off this was the comeback that we’d all be waiting for. It captures Madonna’s mood at the time after her split from Sean Penn.

First album and the Get into the Groove 12″. La Isla Bonita is her most well written and performed song, it has true passion. She’s a sort of Sinatra of her time.
