Disney is responsible for some of the catchiest songs of all time. Whether you’re just trying to let it go or singing no worries for the rest of your days, you have the lyrics to at least one (or 100) Disney tunes stored in your brain. But what about physical music in your collection?
We’re breaking down the most-collected Disney albums on Discogs. The ranking is determined by how many Discogs users added a Master Release under the Disney brand to their Collection. Nowadays, Disney owns and operates several franchises — Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, The Mupppets, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Caribbean, to name a few — so the resulting roundup features a wide variety of titles and series.
Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by movie soundtracks and scores. The films span across decades and genres, from 1964’s Mary Poppins to 2018’s Black Panther. Star Wars claims seven albums on the ranking, the most of any franchise, followed by The Muppets. Topping the list is Guardians of the Galaxy with Volume 1 (which also boasts one of the most collected cassettes on Discogs) at No. 1 and Volume 2 at No. 3.
We are a tad shocked that some of Disney’s biggest modern hits did not make the cut. Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Tron: Legacy broke the top 25, but you won’t see popular movies like Frozen or Moana. (And if you have a child in your house, you know just how popular those soundtracks are among the young ones.)
However, the most interesting title can be found at No. 10. Amidst fan favorites like the Daft Punk-scored Tron and the star-packed Lion King is a unique collection of spooky sound effects called Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House. According to the Discogs Database, one side of the LP features “10 stories in sound in which the narrator sets up the situation and the sound effects take over and tell the story” while the other side contains just the background sounds so listeners can tell their own scary tales.
The Database is full of interesting details about these albums, but the Disney Music Emporium is the place to find new releases from the beloved brand, ranging from collectible picture discs of classic flicks to massive anniversary box sets.
