New Notification Options

There are now two new notification options available at http://www.discogs.com/users/notifications
(My Discogs -> Preferences -> Set Notification Options)

Email me when a release in my collection is changed Email me when a release I’m selling is changed

The latest changes are checked every 4 hours and, if you have these options enabled, you’ll get a summary of any changes affecting things that are in your collection or that you have listed for sale.

can the notifications options page be made less difficult to understand?

i mean, it is not clear what is meant by “Email me…” because there is not distinction between an email to your personal adress and to your Discogs inbox. If i’m not mistaking means N that you get in only in your Discogs inbox. but can’t we get the choice between sending it to both/none of both/one of both?

i support also the suggestions of [u=MD]

Some of these changes will be made reasonably soon, they will indeed be good refinements!

  • Jan 30,2008 at 4:35 am

This is an excellent step towards keeping a perfect eye on one’s collection. Thank you, teo!

Nevertheless, all those refinement requests from md: seconded!
Could I request some minor refinements to this notification:

    – I’d prefer not to receive these notifications for changes that I’ve made myself to items in my collection, which I have already been informed about when the submission was accepted.

    – I’d prefer to at least have the option of not being notified of changes that I’ve voted (as opposed to commented) Yes/No on, although this may be more down to the fact that my votes on release edits always result in either Accepted or Rejected status so I don’t need telling again. I can understand that other mods would prefer to keep this for subs they’ve voted on, hence the request to make it an option.

    – Surely a daily notification is sufficient? I’m shocked at quite how many of these notifications I’m getting. Several a day.

    – Finally, it would be very useful if the submission type could be included in the message as some may be of greater/less significance.

    e.g.:

We found the following updates which affect releases in your Discogs collection. If you do not wish to receive this email you may disable it at http://www.discogs.com/users/notifications

Agreed with Axefield. On the preferences i would like to see tickboxes for Discogs messages and emails separately.

I’d also like to receive some kind of notification when there are new notifications added. I’ve only just found out about this. Surely it wouldn’t take much time to send all discogs users notification of new features when they are rolled out?

  • Nov 15,2007 at 5:05 am
Could I request some minor refinements to this notification:
fully agreed with that.

Also, sometimes an update is listed several times (posting, first and second vote). Can there be an option, or can it be changed to get the accepted ones only?

  • Nov 15,2007 at 3:14 am

What about the option to NOT get emails for order placed and received and all communication within orders. For daily visitors it’s very anoying to get all that stuff in your normal mailbox without the option to SHUT IT OFF…

  • Nov 14,2007 at 12:12 pm

Since I guess you won’t change your mind on the unmoderated reviews I’d like to have a notification when a review has been added to one of the releases in my collection.

  • Oct 18,2007 at 4:17 am

me wholeheartedly supports that whole set of [u=md]’s requests – esp. the last one

This is a good feature! :-)

  • Oct 17,2007 at 1:59 am

Is there a way to receive these notifications in the Discogs-Inbox, but not via external e-mail?

    When I selected “Don’t send” I didn’t receive either.

  • Oct 16,2007 at 10:29 pm

    great – thanks a lot
how about posting a link to this rather discreet announcement in the numerous threads of the discogs development forum that request the exact same thing?

  • Oct 13,2007 at 2:47 pm
I have received a few notifications of changes although the edit submissions were rejected or canceled by the user. I think in these cases, notifications shouldn’t go out.
I prefer to have them. This way I can track what has happened to subs I commented/voted on after they leave the queue. Since we don’t have a functioning Voter History, this is the next best thing…

  • Oct 13,2007 at 12:38 pm

I have received a few notifications of changes although the edit submissions were rejected or canceled by the user. I think in these cases, notifications shouldn’t go out.

Also, although most of the time they’ve been notifications that have not affected my collection (oops, this isn’t the right release!) it’s really awesome to see this feature implemented to know what happens to releases I’ve probably never given a second though to look back at in Discogs. Thanks!
what happens if you are selling a whitlabel version of a record through the commercial release page and someone then creates a separate whitelabel release page? Nothing on the original commercial release page will have changed, so according to these new options, you will not be notified.

i guess i’m asking a question along the same lines as azymuth74 above.
This is a feature that’s specced into the Master Release function. I don’t think it will happen before that goes live. To azymuth74’s point – if you’re selling a white label or anything other than the “standard” version of a release then you should already be explaining this in the comments field of your sales listing, so you’d be covered to a certain extent.

  • Oct 9,2007 at 11:21 am

When I deleted my other Plastic_Demons account it was because it contained my personal collection, and I too found that I couldn’t correctly show the releases that I owned, which rendered the account as useless for the type of collector that I am. :o?
Thanks to your perseverance Stormbringer you have made one giant leap for all of us, that are ‘Collectors’ in the true sense of the word. I for one will certainly be (and have already started) making sure that the fight you put up will be justified, by the inclusion of many of the releases from my own collection that would otherwise be missing from the database.

Many thanks from one collector to another.

  • Oct 9,2007 at 9:47 am
Hope this does a useful job for users such as md and Stormbringer who have campaigned for this type of function.
I haven’t tried it out yet myself as my collection is still wiped clean for this very reason (not being able to keep track of your collection and what happends to it), but I’m very pleased that it eventually got introduced as an important feature here at Discogs.

Right now I’m feeling fatigued after the marathon fight to see these changes become reality.

I haven’t really got everything I want yet ;-) But it’s a start that actually surprisingly (to myself) forces me to still be positive about Discogs development.

When you fight for something that YOU think is obvious, and you fight for years, then it’s hard to understand when you actually win! I’ve got some gratulation mails over the last couple of weeks from various coggers but this day when it’s finally official that all changes done to the stuff in your collection is tracked… It’s a big day for me!

I have other issues… But I won’t bring those up right now!

  • Oct 9,2007 at 9:28 am
”Email me when a release in my collection is changed” …. it’s nonsense, because accepting pending submission doesn’t affected release but affected the STATUS of release
Depends on how you interpret ‘changed’. A change of status is a change too.
I can imagine though that it can result in many inbox messages when it comes to these kind of alerts for your own pending submissions. Especially when you have the “after activity on my pending submissions” notification turned on too. Because then you will get two messages for the same submission. One because it was changed and one because there has been activity on the submission.

[u=nik], [u=teo], am I right with this? If so I think it would be a good thing to exclude own pendings from this new function.

  • Oct 9,2007 at 8:41 am

    Nice feature. Thanks.

A minor thing is that if you have more than 1 copy of a release in your collection, then you get duplicate entries in the summary.

  • Oct 9,2007 at 8:30 am

“Email me when a release in my collection is changed” – this one is just useless for me and it spammed my Inbox so I’ve turned it off :) Because while my own pending releases got accepted I got messages, that “Recent changes affecting releases in your Discogs collection” – it’s nonsense, because accepting pending submission doesn’t affected release but affected the STATUS of release. Pending sumbission became into active submission and what affected release here ? Odd..

  • Oct 9,2007 at 6:36 am
Was it in your collection?
they were in my collection, so that does make some sense. i guess i really don’t need to know if it was cancelled or rejected, but only if it was changed/split and modded into the DB.

are we going to get notifications of all the activity that’s happened since the unique release deluge started? something along the lines of “[r=2162] has been split into [r=2162], [r=1073979] and [r=1074215]”? i guess i’m asking a question along the same lines as [u=azymuth74] above.

    thanks.

  • Oct 9,2007 at 5:27 am

This is great, but I have a question…..what happens if you are selling a whitlabel version of a record through the commercial release page and someone then creates a separate whitelabel release page? Nothing on the original commercial release page will have changed, so according to these new options, you will not be notified. Perhaps if we need a further option called ‘Email me when a draft is created from a release in my collection/I’m selling’??

  • Oct 9,2007 at 1:02 am

This is really good, thank you!
i cancelled two subs i had pending and got the notification. since i cancelled, there wasn’t any change to either release. is this a bug?
Was it in your collection? If so that’s why. If another user added it to their collection they should get notice if it was cancelled or rejected.

  • Oct 8,2007 at 1:27 pm

i cancelled two subs i had pending and got the notification. since i cancelled, there wasn’t any change to either release. is this a bug?

that said, i really appreciate the notification given the proliferation of uniqueness around here sans master releases.

    Oct 8,2007 at 12:25 pm

I have already got two notifications! It’s going to be quite interesting how this affects the site, it already seems quite a deep change to know every move on every item in my collection. Hope this does a useful job for users such as md and Stormbringer who have campaigned for this type of function. I am sure it will help the correctness of the data by quite a long way.

  • Oct 8,2007 at 12:10 pm

Ok, when something is good it may also be told, and this is good. Thanks.
