At Discogs, all our lives (and our jobs) spin around music. Our teams are scattered across the world – in a Portland, OR, office, one in Amsterdam and with many working remote. This can make it difficult for us to know what we’re all listening to and to geek out about our respective collections. Luckily, we use Slack and have an active Music channel where we share what’s playing at home or in the office. A gem of a game has emerged from this channel, one we affectionately call Collection Roulette.
Collection Roulette’s rules are simple. Navigate to your collection and click on the dice icon if you’re on a desktop computer. On the mobile apps, you can simply shake your phone when the app is open and it’ll select a random item from your Collection.
Share the selection with your friends. We typically share using Slack, but while not at work Instagram stories is a great outlet too. You will then have to play the record. Here’s the catch – and it’s one I promise you’ll run into sooner rather than later – if you select a random release and it’s not something you want to hear, you’ll need to list it for sale! The Collection Roullete game using the random item feature has been a great way to dive deep into our personal collections and has also helped me personally cull some records out to make room for new ones.
