In anticipation of this historic event, we caught up with Danny for a few words, and he filled us in on his Top 10 Most Wanted 45’s.
This event is in celebration of your 45th year of DJ’ing. What do you credit for such longevity?
I loved music 45 years ago, and the only thing I love more is sharing it with people who feel the same. It just gets better and better.
When you took up DJ’ing, did you anticipate this becoming your career? Did you ever imagine you would be spinning for 45 years and beyond?
I never thought ever that it would be for 45 years and beyond. When I started it was only just a hobby, but in my first year when James Brown gave me two white label promos, I knew I was going to stick with it.
In your opinion, what are the qualities of a great DJ?
Connecting with their audience and feeling what their doing. There’s a list of things, but those two are on top.
I’ve read that your preferred format for spinning is on vinyl. Can you elaborate on why you prefer vinyl over other formats?
It sounds better. Best. You can hold it in your hands. The big picture helps too.
In addition to DJ'ing, you are legendary for your remixes and edits of Disco, Soul and Funk classics. Can you tell us about a couple of your personal favorites?
There are a lot, but if I had to pick one, it would be Love Is The Message. I did it over 30 years ago, and it's really stood the test of time.
What inspires you to create an edit of a song?
To begin with, I have to like it. And when I really like it, sometimes I just wish it would do more or less of something.
You’ve traveled the world over many times to spin sets. Do you have any favorite regions or cities that you love to return to?
Clearly it's New York first. After New York, I’d have to say Japan.
What can we look forward to for your 46th year of DJ'ing? Is there anything upcoming that you can share
A lot of vinyl releases, and just keeping busy in general.
Final question: How do you still look so darn young?
The love of music. If I was selling insurance, I’m sure I'd look a lot older.
