Alright, quick show of hands whose answer to the January Blues is buying records? We can’t find fault with that, and I’m willing to bet moods were buoyed with January’s record finds.
Classical music isn’t typically a big seller on Discogs – there are under a million classical releases in the Discogs Database (of over 12 million), and of the 53 million releases listed in the Marketplace, less than 5% of those are classical. But one savvy buyer knows an unmissable opportunity when it comes to this Ludwig Van 13 LP box set.

Our very own Diognes_The_Fox is probably kicking himself now after selling D.R. Hooker’s The Truth years earlier for just over half the price it went for in January. You can read more about his experience with this “real-life holy grail of psychedelic rock” and discoveries about this release here.
Discogs sellers made just shy of $60,000 from these 30 records alone in January. Check out what music lovers are willing to shell big bucks for.

Madang, the cheap copies were obviously reissues or bootlegs. Sellers listed them on the original issue page probably because separate listings for the reissue/bootleg didn’t exist yet (or to get more reach on wishlists).
For me the most amusing lot is actually D.R. Hooker’s – I haven’t heard the album yet or researched the story, but on the Price History page there was clearly ZERO hype all the way up until 2016, and LP was sold a few times at totally normal prices, never above $42 (and that’s for an unsealed copy). And then, it skyrocketed STRAIGHT into $$$$ in just one year.
Otherwise, as always, the best segment on Discogs’ blog. I just wish that each position on the list would be at least briefly annotated – to explain the particular value, rarity, etc.
And, btw, I still wish the list of ‘most expensive ITEMS’ wouldn’t be limited just to vinyl! Extremely curious to see how a monthly TOP-5 (at least) looks like for other formats as well, like CDs and cassettes. Even if they are banking less $$$$ in total numbers, I’m sure there are plenty of anecdotal items and interesting trends to evaluate and observe.
Green Eyed God by Steel Mill was at most a $300 LP
in 2015. Hard to fathom what factors would drive
the price up so high in such a relatively short
period of time? It’s not even that rare.
Probably an impulse buy from some rich
intoxicated prog. Barney.
I love this feature. Thanks for sharing. I’ve sold used and rare books since 1997 online. I remember early on excited collectors waiting for years to complete their collections would pay amazing prices but then a glut of books hit the Internet and prices fell like rocks. I’m curious to see if this happens to vinyl also. I sense that it’s a completely different market so hopefully not.
The Top30 list is generated by paid invoices, so if your sales aren’t closed, it is possible they could show up on upcoming lists.
Hi, I sold 3 items in marketplace in January that should have made this list. The most expensive, Strategy by Level 42 sold for £3,500. Sandstorm acetate also by Level 42 sold for £2,900. Love Meeting Love (clear vinyl) again by Level 42 went for £1100. How come none are in the list please?
