Top 30 Most Expensive Records Sold On Discogs – October 2017

by falsepriest

This month, we come painfully close to record-breaking territory in list of most expensive records sold on Discogs. Coming up $243 just short on the $15000 sale of a 1987 promo copy of Prince’s ‘The Black Album’, The Beatles fetched $14757 for a 7″ UK Parlophone demo version of their first release, ‘Love Me Do’. Only 250 copies of this release exist, with a songwriting credit to Lennon-McArtney.

While The Beatles will have to settle for second place on the most expensive record sale ever on Discogs, it does set a new record for the most expensive 7″. This release has appeared on the top 30 only once before, in December 2013 at a comparatively paltry $1635. If you have one of these 7″s, for the love of all that is good and righteous – keep it safe.

The only artist to have more than one release in the top 30 this month is Masayuki Takayanagi. The pioneering free improvisation guitarist was a leading member of every avant-garde jazz movement in Japan from the ’50s onwards. Takayanagi is no stranger to the top 30, with ‘Independence: Tread On Sure Ground’ making its way in to the most expensive records sold list twice before, in July of this year and January 2015. With only one copy currently listed in the marketplace for $2964, we’re pretty confident we’ll be seeing him on this list again soon.

One of the more interesting releases to surface on the top 30 of October is an IndustrialAmbientExperimentalMusique ConcrèteNoiseAbstractAvantgardeKrautrock compilation in the form of a suitcase containing 32 cassettes. For an indication of what kind of music you’ll be getting in this suitcase look no further than The Nihilist Spasm Band‘s Discogs page: “The NSB was formed in 1965 by a group of people who enjoyed music and wanted to play in a band. There was no desire to learn to play traditional instruments so kazoos were bought and assorted noise makers modified or built from scratch.” With 24 releases under their belt, are they the most prolific kazoo-centric band ever?
